Style R comes in two basic styles: Oval and Octagonal used in pressures upto 10,000 PSI. Octagonal is preferred over Oval due to higher sealing efficiency. These are designed for flanges with standard ring-joint grooves. The hardness of the ring gasket should always be 30% lesser than the hardness of the flanges to prevent flange deformation.

The Style RX is an adaptation of the standard Style R which is energized when the assembly is pressurized. The RX is designed to fit the same groove design as a standard Style R, making the joints interchangeable. The geometry of this modified design induces a pressure energizing effect when the assembly is pressurized, improving the efficiency of the seal.

BX gaskets are designed to allow virtual face-to-face contact of the flanges to ensure that the gasket is fully trapped on both the inner and outer diameters. BX gaskets include a pressure balance hole to allow equalization of pressure which may build up in the grooves. The Style BX is not interchangeable with any other style, and is only suited for API 6BX flanges. Style BX ring type joints are designed to seal pressure up to 20,000 PSI (1,360 bar) in accordance with API 6A pressure ratings. Dimensions of gaskets and corresponding grooves are designed in such a way that style BX gaskets do become self-sealing characteristics. This effect is also known as pressure energized sealing.
The American Petroleum (API) decided to standardize the subsea utilization of metallic gaskets with SBX style RTJ wherein there shall be no dimensional difference between the standard BX and SBX gaskets. Manufactured to API 17D, it is used for Subsea Wellhead and Tree Equipment. The “S” identifies these gaskets as having cross-drilled holes to assure that any liquid trapped behind the ring gasket on either side will flow to the I.D. bore. It allows a pressure-less metal-to-metal initial contact between the gasket and the flange groove.
